Health boards are looking at 24-hour vaccination centres in Wales, Health Minister Vaughan Gething has revealed.

In a meeting in the Senedd today, f ormer Welsh Conservative Party leader Andrew RT Davies asked Mr Gething a series of questions in relation to the vaccine plan that was put forward on Monday.

He also asked how the plan would enable Wales to catch up and overtake other parts of the United Kingdom in the roll out of the jabs.

In response, Vaughan Gething said much more significant supply of the vaccine was expected in Wales.

“We are expecting a much bigger increase in vaccine supply for the third week. Getting primary care up and running and ready is really important for that third week where we’ll have much greater supply,” he said.

“I’ve seen some of the concerns that some primary care deliverers have had that they could do more if they had more supply.

“We’re actually running with the Oxford AstraZeneca supply with the supplies that we’ve been given. But I do think people in all parts of Wales should take some assurance from the fact that we expect a much more significant supply to come into Wales and will then be delivered in Wales from the next week in particular.”

He also added that they expected every local authority would eventually have a mass vaccination centre.

When talking about the possibility of a 24-hours-a-day operations, the Health Minister said this was something health boards were looking at.

“When it comes to 24/7, that is something health boards are looking at, I’m not setting an objective that everyone must have a 24/7 delivery model. I want the best and the quickest delivery model available and if we set an objective that everyone must deliver 24/7, that may not achieve that.

“I think some health boards will trial it to see if it does not just expand access but speed of delivery and I look forward to learning from that. We won’t know until that’s essentially been tried. My directive to the system is to go as fast as possible, as safely as possible but to do so in a way we look after our staff and our volunteers who are giving the vaccines and making it as easy as possible for the public to get those vaccines as well.”

On Monday Mr Gething laid out three key targets for the rollout of the coronavirus vaccines across Wales.

He said that by mid-February – all care home residents and staff; frontline health and social care staff; everyone over 70 and everyone who was clinically extremely vulnerable would have been offered vaccination.
