A takeaway in Newport is giving free Christmas dinner to people over 60 who are living alone

Posted by: admin , December 24, 2020

A chip shop in Newport is extending the goodwill this festive season by offering free dinner to anyone over 60 who will be alone on Christmas Day.

The Fallows Fish Bar in Lliswerry will be serving up piping hot fish, chips, sausages and more to those who are feeling isolated, in a year where many have spent months alone during lockdown.

The shop’s manager Saif said he wanted to give those who are alone this Christmas something to look forward to.

“Given the current situation and the area we have the shop in, we have lot of retired people who have no one to take care of them,” he said.

“They can’t celebrate Christmas like other people, so we decided to give them a reason to smile.”

Saif added that the shop was normally closed on the big day but would open this year to help out those most in need.

“It is quite painful to celebrate the festive season on your own when you can’t go anywhere, so why not share with us?” he said.

“My staff are quite happy to work for people in need and contribute towards peace and harmony for the community.

“Normally we are closed on Christmas Day, but this year we changed it and decided to celebrate it with our community.”

Both Wales and parts of England have increased restrictions around Christmas Day after a spike in cases which has been linked to a new, more infectious variant of coronavirus.
