Ten areas of Newport have more than 300 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 population.

The latest local data shows that a number of areas seeing high incidence rates this week.

However, no area has a rate of infection per 100,000 people as high as Rogerstone the previous week (650.2).

The hyper-local data shows the amount of coronavirus cases and the number of cases in relation to population.

In Newport, the wards with the highest incidence rates of the virus are Marshfield (561.7), Rogerstone (509.3), Ringland (484.8) and Lliswerry & Uskmouth (440.9).

Six other areas had incidence rates of more than 300 per 100,000 people.

The data is based on the rolling seven-day average up to Thursday, December 3.

In terms of the number of cases of the virus, Lliswerry & Uskmouth had the most (51). This was followed by Victoria & Somerton (48), Marshfield (47) and Rogerstone (47).

Areas with lower numbers of cases include Duffryn & Maesglas (36), Ringland (26) and Caerleon (24), followed by Pillgwenlly & Docks (22), Maindee (22), Bettws (22), Beechwood (22) and Pye Corner & Graig (20).

The areas with under 20 cases were Ridgeway & Glasllwch (19), Lawrence Hill (18), St Julian’s & Barnardtown (18), Shaftesbury & Crindai (19), Langstone & Llanwern (16), Stow Hill (15), Gaer (14) and Malpas (10).

What does this data mean?

While this information does indicate the infection rate and number of cases in each ward, it is important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. This means that even a small number of cases in an area with a comparatively smaller population can have a significant effect on the infection rate per 100,000.

For example, Pillgwenlly & Docks and Beechwood have the exact same number of cases in the past week (22 each). However, the rate of infection per 100,000 in Pillgwenlly & Docks (248.8) is lower than Beechwood’s (361.1).

This is because Pillgwenlly & Docks has a larger population than Beechwood.

What has Mark Drakeford said about the levels of the virus in Wales?

The first minister said on Friday that Welsh Government had made the right choice in setting out new rules banning pubs and restaurants from serving alcohol.

He said the government would need to see a “sustained fall” in the number of people falling ill with coronavirus in order for the restrictions to be lifted on December 17.

Defending the new restrictions, Mr Drakeford said that when he stood in front of the press a week ago he was reporting high numbers of people in hospital.

“The only thing that has happened to those numbers is they have gone up relentlessly everyday,” he said.
