Publicans across Swansea have said they are going to shut their pubs after new coronavirus restrictions banning the sale of alcohol come into force.
First Minister Mark Drakeford announced pubs, restaurants and cafes wouldn’t be able to serve alcohol at all and would be unable to open to customers beyond 6pm in an attempt to tackle the rise in cases of coronavirus.
But for many pubs across Wales, they feel it is “impossible” to stay open without being able to sell alcohol.
Yesterday, we reported how the Welsh Government had come under heavy criticism for the move, which comes into force on Friday, December 4, at 6pm, with Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin describing the measures as “puritanical and a sad reflection of groupthink”.
Do you agree with the new restrictions, or not. Let us know your thoughts here.
We’ve contacted pubs across Swansea to find out their plans on whether they intend to remain open after the new restrictions are introduced.
The following city pubs have confirmed they will remain closed from Friday at 6pm until they are permitted by the Welsh Government to sell alcohol again.
Places to eat and drink near where you live:
The Cross Keys – St Mary Street, Swansea
It wrote on its Facebook page: “Following the announcement we have decided to close as of 6pm on Friday until further notice.
“As a wet pub it is impossible for us to stay open.
“We are very sorry to our regular loyal customers who have always supported us before and throughout this difficult time.
“We hope to see you all soon. Please continue to stay safe. We will get through this together.”
The Griffin – Wind Street, Swansea
In an e-mail sent out to its customers, the team at The Griffin wrote: “Let’s face it, there’s no place like the pub, especially at Christmas.
“However, we’re sad to say that as we are in Tier 3, we remain closed for now but we want you to know our teams behind the scenes are ready and waiting for when we can open our doors again – which we hope will be in time for Christmas.
“We hope it won’t be long until we can welcome you back and bring you some festive cheer. We’ve missed you, and we hope you’ve missed us. While it’s not the Christmas we’d all hoped for, we hope that soon, we can help you make the most of it.”
