Peter Sawkins says winning Great British Bake Off left him like “a giddy kid”

Posted by: admin , November 24, 2020

Youngest ever Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins said his victory in last night’s final left him feeling like “a giddy kid”.

The 20-year-old has been a fan of the show since he was 12 – and first baked cupcakes with his brother aged four.

Stunned Peter said: “I wanted this a lot. When I was 12, I was watching repeats of Bake Off back to back.

“It got me into baking big time. I think 12-year-old Peter would be in awe, and just the most excited giddy kid. I am that excited giddy kid right now.”

Peter, who calls himself “a Bake Off nerd”, went up against Dave Friday, 30, and Laura Adlington, 31, in the final.

They had to make a signature custard slice, a walnut whirl in the technical round and dessert towers for the finale.

Scot Peter’s cranachan custard slice, with whisky and Scottish oats, got him off to a flying start. But his Showstopper bubble cake wowed the judges.

Built on a Victoria sandwich sponge with strawberry cream, he made the middle layer of blackberry and lemon choux buns, while mini Battenberg biscuits completed the top layer.

Peter, of Edinburgh, admitted: “It was never in my mind I could win this. I was so focused on what I was doing, I had no idea what the other two were doing.

“The tent felt so bare, we were so far from each other. It was so different from week one when there were 12 of us.

“Dave and Laura were so supportive at the final – it was good to have that.”

Judge Paul Hollywood said Peter should be “exceptionally proud”. He said: “He’s the youngest winner we’ve ever had and the first Scottish winner.”

Fellow judge Prue Leith added: “I’m terribly proud of Peter – I feel as if he’s my grandson. You can’t not like him.”

Once he left the show’s bubble, Peter faced an anxious trip back to Scotland trying to not give away that he had won.

He said: “I had to smuggle the trophy on the plane. I was a bit stressed when we went through the scanners.

“I hope I’ve made Scotland proud – I enjoyed using Scottish flavours and themes throughout the competition.”

Peter, studying accounting at Edinburgh University, watched the Channel 4 final with flatmates – and pastries.

He said of filming in a bubble of 120 people: “It was intense but fun.

You saw Paul on his moped, the crew doing yoga – it was like a grown-ups’ holiday camp.”
